What We're Reading

  • Disappointment with God by Philip Yancey
  • The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning
  • The Year of Living Biblically by A. J. Jacobs
A non-religious journalist decides to spend a year engaging the Bible. An intriguing book!
  • Miracles by C. S. Lewis
  • Orthodoxy by G. K. Chesterton
  • Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis
  • Wild at Heart by John Eldredge
  • Total Forgiveness by R. T. Kendall
  • Reaching for the Invisible God by Philip Yancey
Yancey explores the real character of God and the ways we seek and relate to him - both the healthy and unhealthy - and how we can have a more satisfying faith. This book might be a good balance to The Year of Living Biblically, which the frustration, quirkiness, and maybe even silliness of religious practice.
  • The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene
A broken, very imperfect priest struggles with his own demons, the nature of his calling, and the meaning of love during the religious persecutions of the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century.
  • Jim and Casper Go to Church by Jim Henderson and Matt Casper
How does it look from the outside: a believer pays an atheist to go to church. It's way to easy for Christians to be in our own bubble, clueless to how others see us or what barriers we may have set up. Great book for keeping us honest!
  • Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
A young man's journey to leave find real life. A current bestseller, it left me wondering why our personal journey can be so self-centered and why we think we have to lose others to find ourselves.
  • Call of the Wild (It's not about the dog) by Jack London
Another "stripping down to our wild selves" book. A classic. It's not really about the dog. When we stip ourselves of healthy relationships and our place within the world, what's left - what does our call become?
